Demonic Orders

The Demonic Orders are the least orderly of the great spiritual classifications. The term exists because the Archive requires a way to describe what these beings are; it should not be mistaken for evidence that Demons belong to a unified empire, church, bureaucracy, or chain of command.

Demonic existence is fundamentally predatory. Rather than being sustained through willing communion with a Divine Power or through the enforceable obligations characteristic of infernal existence, Demons persist and grow through consumption. Souls are not followers to be welcomed or claimants to be bound. They are potential prey.

Some Demons originate in the rare persistence of non-sapient magical creatures whose spiritual existence survives death strongly enough to continue within the Unbound Reach. Such beings may remain terrifying but fundamentally animalistic, driven by hunger, territory, instinct, and accumulated power rather than ideology. A Demon can therefore be dangerous without possessing the moral agency of a calculating tyrant.

Demon Lords mark the point at which demonic existence possesses genuine sapience. Some may arise when an ancient predatory Demon survives and grows long enough for consciousness to emerge. Others may begin with a sapient soul that deliberately embraces spiritual predation and transforms itself through what it repeatedly chooses to consume and become. In either case, intelligence changes the danger profoundly. Hunger can now plan.

This is also what separates the Demonic from the Infernal. A Devil may want a soul's signature, allegiance, debt, or service. A Demon may simply want the soul.
