Worlds Beside Cardorbis

The Planar Realms are independent realities metaphysically adjacent to Cardorbis. They are not distant continents, hidden regions of the Material World, or subdivisions of the Spiritual World. Most are surviving products of the First Shaping: realities formed while the Twelve Primordials were still learning how their principles could coexist strongly enough to sustain a world. Every Primordial participated in those attempts, but particular relationships became disproportionately dominant, leaving each surviving Realm coherent, magnificent, and fundamentally imbalanced when compared with Cardorbis.

The elemental realms are the clearest early examples. Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind are not ordinary worlds dominated by an element; the element itself forms the physical basis of the entire reality. Later drafts came much closer to a complete living world. The Fae Realm and the Gloam Realm, now commonly grouped as the Out-of-Step Realms, developed recognizable environments, complex ecologies, civilizations, and true soul-bearing peoples. Their failure was not lifelessness or ruin. They simply reached personhood inside realities whose dominant metaphysical assumptions never achieved the balance found in Cardorbis.

A Creation That Learned to Create Consequences

The Astral Realm is the major exception to this history. It was not another surviving draft of the First Shaping. Once Creation produced sufficiently complex soul-bearing consciousness, living minds became capable of imagining what was absent, understanding distant persons and places, forming relationships across great physical separation, and collectively sustaining concepts beyond immediate perception. A receptive metaphysical possibility associated especially with Magic, Motion, and Solar Radiance crossed a threshold into a self-sustaining reality. In later theological language, Creation became capable of imagining Creation.

Conscious beings continue to reshape Astral geography, but the Astral Realm is now a reality in its own right. It does not vanish when an individual stops thinking about it, and no single imagination can rewrite it at will. Like the older Realms, it can align with Cardorbis and participate in Seams, but its internal geography follows conceptual relationship rather than ordinary Material distance.

The Turning of Contact

The Planar Realms do not sit behind fixed doors. Cardorbis and its neighboring realities possess recurring patterns of metaphysical affinity. As those patterns approach alignment, the rules of another Realm begin to act within part of Cardorbis. A Seam forms, deepens, may develop a Seam-Nexus, and eventually recedes as that alignment falls away. The Nexus itself has not traveled from one place to another. A different portion of Cardorbis has entered the next alignment.

Mortal scholars often compare the process to the turning of immense gears or spokes, but this is a model rather than a literal machine. The useful truth is simpler: the Nexuses do not roam; the worlds turn. Contact occurs wherever their patterns next align. Because warning signs generally precede deep contact, cultures that understand planar resonance can sometimes prepare before a Seam becomes dangerous.

Contact Without Containment

A Seam does not make another Realm part of Cardorbis. It creates a region in which the conditions of both realities can act at once. Magic may become easier or more dangerous, foreign substances and organisms may cross, local terrain may be transformed, and beings adapted to the neighboring Realm may survive where they normally could not. When the alignment ends, many of those consequences remain. Mountains, ores, altered waters, unusual ecologies, inherited weather patterns, and other planar fossils can preserve evidence of contacts that ended long before surviving history.

This distinction is essential to the Shape of Creation. The Material World, the Planar Realms, and the Spiritual World can influence one another without being the same kind of place. Proximity is not containment, and contact is not ownership. Cardorbis remains the balanced Material creation of the Twelve even while neighboring realities periodically leave their marks upon it.
