The Kharavel Range

A Mountain Range Still Being Made

The Kharavel Range rises across southeastern Merathen within an active Earth Seam. The paired mountain systems that give the continent its jawlike profile are not only ancient geology preserving a vanished contact. Earth influence is acting on the region now, continuing to alter structure, pressure, mineral arrangement, caverns, and elevation while the surrounding Material landscape resists and incorporates those changes.

The range therefore has no final form. Existing ridges can thicken or fracture, new stone can be exposed or forced upward, and passages that were stable for generations can become unreliable as deeper material relationships change. The process is measured on geographic scales rather than as a single catastrophic event, but for settlements, mines, roads, and fortifications built along the range, even slow planar reconstruction can become a practical danger.

The Value of Active Earth

Earth contact does more than raise mountains. The Earth Realm contains forms of stone, crystal, ore, metal, pressure-state, and mineral structure that do not occur naturally in the same combinations within Cardorbis. As the Seam exchanges material with the Material World and reconstructs local matter, rare deposits can appear, older deposits can be transformed, and familiar ores can acquire unusual structures or magical properties.

That makes the Kharavel Range extremely valuable and extremely difficult to exploit. A newly discovered vein may lie inside terrain that is still changing. A cavern may expose extraordinary material while also opening into conditions increasingly hostile to ordinary Material life. The richest ground is not automatically the safest ground, and the active Seam ensures that maps of mines, passes, and subterranean routes can become outdated even while the mountains remain recognizable at continental scale.

The Jaw of Merathen

From the sea, the Kharavel Range forms the rocky southeastern jaw of Merathen. Cliffs and steep outer slopes dominate much of the coast, while inland elevations descend through broken uplands and foothills toward the Maeloren Plains. The active Earth influence helps maintain the range's extraordinary scale, but not every stone or slope is equally planar. Farther from the strongest contact, ordinary erosion, weather, vegetation, rivers, and settlement increasingly govern the landscape.

A Living Frontier

Because the Seam is active, the Kharavel Range is both a geographic region and a planar frontier. It can produce valuable materials, dangerous environments, and new routes into Earth-altered terrain while also threatening anything built too confidently upon the assumption that the mountains have finished becoming what they are. The jawlike shape seen on maps is therefore a present snapshot of a range still being written into Merathen.
