Talurai

Life in Water and Air

Talurai are freshwater fish-derived Beastfolk whose sapient architecture is not tied to a single familiar fish species. They possess a fully legged humanoid body with a separate long tail, subtle scales, fin- or frill-like structures around the sides of the head, and soft aquatic facial features. They can breathe indefinitely underwater and indefinitely in ordinary air.

Their bodies nevertheless remain adapted to continual environmental moisture. Prolonged dryness does not immediately injure or suffocate a healthy Talurai, but it produces an increasingly persistent sensation of being dried out and a strong desire for immersion, mist, or humid surroundings. Water-rich environments feel physically natural in a way arid ones do not.

Perception and Ascension

Talurai are unusually sensitive to water movement, obstruction, circulation, and changes in flow. The Archive presently treats this as inherited physiological and perceptual specialization rather than proof of intrinsic water magic.

Humble Current and Queen of Living Waters belong to one Talurai Ascension line. The later form becomes more graceful and luminous, but Ascension does not turn the individual into a different species or Lineage.

Beyond Seloren

Deep freshwater environments such as Seloren provide a natural ancestral heartland for Talurai populations, but the Lineage is not confined to one lake. Talurai can live and work along rivers, irrigation networks, coasts, ships, and terrestrial settlements so long as they can manage the dryness of their surroundings.
