Political Geography

Realms, Nations & Settlements of Varethen

Varethen contains four major western kingdoms, numerous smaller communities and wild territories, strategically vital pass-cities, and the sprawling vampire civilization of the east. Their borders, settlements, roads, and frontier domains have been shaped by centuries of pressure surrounding the recurring Red Moon.

Varethen is politically dominated by two very different structures: four major western kingdoms that cooperate when continental survival requires it, and the vast vampire civilization occupying much of the east. Neither side is politically simple, and neither fills every stretch of land it influences.

The Four Western Kingdoms

Four major kingdoms form the principal organized powers west of the great mountain system. They remain sovereign states with their own rulers, institutions, settlements, military traditions, and interests. Repeated Red Moon cycles and the long pressure of vampire expansion have nevertheless given them strong reasons to cooperate, especially when a mountain crossing or frontier corridor comes under serious threat.

Their territories are separated and surrounded by a much larger lived landscape. Smaller settlements, minor powers, independent communities, wild country, monster territories, magical-beast habitats, old ruins, farms, forests, and river systems occupy the spaces between major political centers. Varethen does not require every inhabited place to belong neatly to one of its four great kingdoms.

Pass Cities and Frontier Settlements

The mountain corridors create settlements whose importance can exceed the size of the states around them. Some began as trade cities, mining centers, market towns, or fortified crossings long before vampires became their defining military concern. Grimpeak Citadel is the clearest surviving example: a city whose wealth, engineering, religion, logistics, and defenses were built around control of a major passage and later adapted to a war of repeated survival.

Other settlements exist farther from the great crossings. Briarford is a small river town whose significance comes from where road, river, farmland, forest, and frontier pressure meet. Villages east of Grimpeak can survive for generations and then become evacuation objectives within weeks as the Red Moon approaches. Settlement in Varethen is therefore political geography at its most immediate scale.

The Vampire Lands

The eastern civilization outsiders call the Vampire Lands is not a single kingdom or empire. It is a network of domains, Houses, courts, cities, human communities, undead institutions, subordinate territories, frontier claims, and ancient rulers bound together by age, dominion, obligation, rivalry, and the competing authority of the Rival Thrones.

Its interior can remain stable for centuries while its frontier changes rapidly. Younger vampires gain standing by conquering and holding new territory, making expansion one of the principal ways ambition can escape a hierarchy in which age cannot be overtaken. That pressure continually drives the political edge of the Vampire Lands westward even when individual campaigns fail.

One Continent, Different Meanings of Survival

The western kingdoms and the Vampire Lands do not differ simply because one side is mortal and the other undead. Their institutions have developed different answers to continuity, sacrifice, authority, freedom, preservation, and change. Those answers become visible in how they govern settlements, move supplies, fortify rivers, treat subjects, preserve roads, abandon territory, and prepare for the next Red Moon.

Varethen's political geography is therefore not a collection of flags laid over empty space. It is the record of how different societies have learned to live inside the same recurring pressure.
