Major Physical Regions of Varethen
Varethen is structured around an Earth-amplified mountain system, natural western watersheds, a Great Branch touchdown in the northwest, and eastern lowlands whose rivers and daylight have been increasingly engineered by long-established vampire domains.
Varethen's physical geography is organized around one enormous mountain system, several major watersheds, broad western lowlands and wild country, a Great Branch touchdown in the northwest, and eastern lands whose natural rivers and settlement patterns have been progressively altered by centuries of vampire rule.
These are physical structures before they are political ones. Kingdoms, domains, and frontiers have moved repeatedly across them. The mountains remain mountains when a pass changes hands, and a river remains part of one watershed even when different rulers control its banks.
The Mountain Spine
The dominant landform of Varethen is the broad north-south mountain system slightly east of the continent's center. Ancient Earth contact amplified an already formidable range into a region of major peaks, parallel ridges, high basins, deep valleys, caverns, faults, mineral zones, and only a limited number of major traversable corridors.
The mountains therefore shape both drainage and movement. Rivers descend from them in both directions, while roads and armies must concentrate around the passages where geography permits large-scale crossing.
The Western Country
West of the mountains, rivers generally retain more natural courses. They meander, flood, build wetlands and floodplains, and connect farmland, forests, towns, and the wide country between the major kingdoms. Much of this land is not tightly centralized. Large wilderness areas, monster territories, magical-beast ranges, independent settlements, ruins, and minor powers remain part of the ordinary geography of western Varethen.
The Branch-Touched Northwest
The northwest is shaped by contact with a Great Branch of the World Tree. The Branch itself is not a Varethen regional feature; it belongs to the World Tree as a planetary-scale structure. Where it meets Varethen, however, its presence creates a transition landscape of living wood, unusual forest, descending water, roads, settlements, and ecological relationships unlike those of the surrounding continent.
The Eastern Foothills and Lowlands
East of the mountain system, long valleys and foothill corridors descend toward older settled lowlands. Historically these were ordinary roads, farms, rivers, towns, and trade routes connecting the mountains to the eastern interior. Today many form the unstable ground across which the vampire frontier advances.
The deeper one travels into long-established vampire territory, the more the physical landscape reveals accumulated control. Rivers become interrupted by reservoirs, canals, holding basins, engineered crossings, and abandoned natural channels. Shadow infrastructure can cover entire settled valleys while still permitting agriculture beneath filtered light. The land remains fertile and inhabited; it has been engineered toward predictability.
Where Physical Regions Meet
Varethen's major landscapes do not end at perfect lines. Mountains descend through foothills. Rivers cross political borders. Forests become farmland gradually. Vampire engineering overlays older natural systems rather than replacing geology itself.
For that reason, future regional names can describe broad coherent landscapes without pretending that every boundary is exact. The purpose of this archive is not to fill every piece of Varethen with a label. It is to preserve enough physical structure that kingdoms, settlements, roads, monsters, and future discoveries have somewhere coherent to belong.
