The Water Realm

The Water Realm is a surviving elemental draft of Creation in which Water itself forms the entirety of the environment, from liquid reaches and vaporous expanses to ice, pressure-states, dense seas, and stranger Water-derived forms. Shaped most strongly by the God of Ocean and the God of Time, it is a living reality of circulation, connection, pressure, duration, and shifting boundaries, but its native life never crossed the final threshold into soul-bearing personhood.

The Water Realm is not an ocean resting upon hidden land. It is a complete reality in which Water itself forms the environmental substance of Creation. There is no seabed beneath it, no atmosphere above it, and no distant shore waiting beyond the horizon. Liquid Water, vaporous reaches, immense ice formations, crushing pressure-states, superheated regions, and stranger magically stabilized expressions all belong to the same elemental substrate. What an Cardorbian would call an ocean is therefore only one possible condition inside a reality that is Water all the way through.

A Realm Without Land

Because there is no universal ground, the Realm has no single cosmic direction that functions as down. Local orientation can arise from currents, pressure systems, dense Water formations, enormous ice structures, magical flows, and the habits of native life, but these relationships change from region to region. A traveler may spend days moving through a gentle liquid expanse, enter a current that carries them across an enormous pressure boundary, and emerge into a region whose native inhabitants treat an entirely different direction as beneath them. Navigation depends less upon distance than upon knowing which current, pressure front, thermal boundary, or phase transition leads toward the desired region.

The Realm nevertheless possesses recognizable geography. Water can separate into stable regimes whose differences are visible and physically meaningful even though no solid wall divides them. Temperature, pressure, density, phase, circulation, and magical state can create boundaries resembling lakes suspended inside seas, rivers flowing through other Water, vast walls of liquid, slow dark basins enclosed within faster currents, vaporous reaches, and ice formations extending farther than Material mountain ranges. An Cardorbian may see a still black surface hanging in open Water like a lake without a shore, only to discover that crossing it leads into a region of radically different pressure, temperature, movement, and native ecology.

the God of Ocean and the God of Time

All of the Primordial Gods and Goddesses participated in the Water draft, but the God of Ocean and the God of Time shaped it most strongly. the God of Ocean's influence does not make him the God of all Water. His principle is the Ocean as a connected system of great waters, and that relationship dominates the Realm's architecture. Regions that appear separate still belong to one connected medium. Currents circulate between distant reaches, pressure systems influence one another across enormous spans, and native ecologies develop through exchange rather than true isolation.

the God of Time's influence gives those connected systems an unusually strong relationship with duration. Time does not reverse in the Water Realm, nor does sequence cease to matter, but its great processes unfold across radically different scales. One current may complete its cycle within hours while another circulates over centuries. A migration may depend upon a pressure event that returns only once in many generations. Some ecological systems change so slowly that they appear eternal to short-lived visitors, while neighboring regions transform constantly. Water therefore preserves patterns not by remaining still, but by continuing to move through Time.

Life Made of Water

The Water Realm contains genuine Life. the Goddess of Life's participation allowed organisms to emerge, the God of Nature's influence allowed them to form real ecologies, the God of Matter and Form gave even fluid existence the possibility of stable Form, and the Primordial of Death ensures that living patterns can truly end. Yet as in the other elemental drafts, the most sophisticated native creatures approached but did not cross the final threshold into soul-bearing personhood. Some can learn socially, use simple tools, recognize long-term relationships, coordinate in groups, or maintain behavior resembling primitive tradition, but they never achieved the fully reflective personhood from which a Soul emerges.

Their bodies do not need to resemble Material animals. Some maintain clear boundaries through membranes or regions of Water held at different density and magical organization. Others exist as stable circulating patterns whose anatomy is defined by vortices, pressure structures, and controlled flows rather than flesh. Individual Water can pass through such a creature while the living pattern remains recognizable, much as a Material body replaces parts of itself without becoming a different individual. Other organisms form rigid ice-like shells, shed them during later stages of life, cultivate colonies around permanent currents, or anchor themselves to persistent intersections where multiple flows meet.

The most advanced Water-native creatures can manipulate their environment in ways that only loosely resemble Material tool use. They may shape ice, redirect currents, build pressure traps, cultivate useful organisms, or preserve rare pieces of foreign matter carried into the Realm during old exchanges. A fragment of Material stone may be mundane to an Cardorbian and profoundly strange to a creature whose entire universe is made from Water-derived states.

Perception and Predation

Native perception commonly develops around pressure, vibration, flow, temperature, and magical disturbance rather than ordinary sight alone. A moving body announces itself by displacing the medium around it, allowing some predators to track prey through minute pressure changes or the rhythm of internal circulation. Others sense temperature wakes, current disruption, or differences in magical organization. Radiance exists because the God of the Sun participated in the draft, and some organisms or Water formations emit light, but many regions remain effectively dark to Material eyes without being perceptually empty to native life.

Mortal Exploration

A mortal who crosses fully into the Water Realm is not merely underwater. There is nowhere to surface because there is no Air above the Water, and no hidden shoreline exists somewhere beyond ordinary sight. Even carrying breathable gas is not enough by itself. Pressure, temperature, currents, and the Realm's native physical rules can destroy an ordinary Material enclosure if it is not deliberately maintained. Exploration therefore requires extraordinary Magic, specialized vessels, pressure protection, temperature control, propulsion, and some means of preserving a small region of Material conditions against the surrounding elemental reality.

This makes failure especially dangerous. Earth can trap or crush a traveler, but Water can leave an expedition intact enough to drift while offering nowhere safe to stop. A disabled vessel may be carried by currents for years, pushed across pressure boundaries it was never built to survive, or disappear into a circulation system whose return path does not recur within a mortal lifetime.

Water Seams in Cardorbis

An approaching Water Seam first announces itself through easier Water-associated Magic, unusual attunements, shifting groundwater, altered humidity, changes in springs and rivers, and other disturbances that ordinary weather cannot explain. As the overlap deepens, small native organisms may be carried across with the exchange, while Material creatures or debris can be swept in the opposite direction. In the Deep Seam, entire drainage systems may be rebuilt as Water enters or leaves Cardorbis in quantities capable of flooding valleys, draining lakes, or transforming coastlines.

Because planar equilibrium operates only across immense spans, a single Water alignment does not need to compensate for an earlier one. A strong influx can drown lowlands without an immediate answering withdrawal, while several large withdrawals across an age could shrink seas and make freshwater an extraordinarily scarce strategic resource. The opposite sequence could leave much of the world beneath expanded oceans. Such extremes are possibilities permitted by the structure of planar exchange rather than events that must already have occurred in established history.

Water-native life may also adapt to Cardorbis more readily than many Earth or Fire organisms because Material oceans, rivers, and wetlands can provide at least partial environmental compatibility once a Seam recedes. Some stranded creatures die when full planar conditions disappear, but others can survive, establish descendants, or become part of local ecologies. Old Water contact zones can therefore remain dangerous long after the Nexus is gone, especially where deep basins, unusual currents, altered species, or planar materials preserve evidence of an ancient exchange.

A World of Movement Through Time

The Water Realm is defined neither by stillness nor by a single endless sea. Its identity lies in connection, circulation, pressure, shifting boundaries, and systems that persist by continuing to move. Regions are distinguished by the states and relationships of Water rather than by land, and living things evolve around currents rather than terrain. To a Material traveler, the Realm can seem impossibly fluid and directionless. To its native life, it possesses routes, barriers, seasons, habitats, and dangers every bit as real as the mountains and forests of Cardorbis.
