Who is This Card?
A First Spark is someone at the beginning of learning that courage does not require the feeling of confidence to arrive first. Within the grounded avian lineage capable of later developing into Flame Mentor and Phoenix Champion, this title marks an early relationship with fear: not the elimination of it, but the ability to examine what it is saying and decide whether responsible action is still possible. A First Spark learns with preparation rather than exposure for its own sake. Ropes, anchors, demonstrations, repeated practice, weather judgment, and experienced supervision exist because danger does not become educational merely because someone survives it. Sometimes fear identifies a genuine lack of preparation, and the correct response is to stop. At other times the equipment is sound, the conditions are reasonable, and fear remains simply because confidence has not yet caught up with competence.
Ormedra has made this distinction central to its culture of training. Its instructors do not treat turning back as automatic failure or reckless forward movement as proof of character. First Sparks can emerge wherever people learn to distinguish a danger that should be respected from an uncertainty that can responsibly be entered. The mountain is simply one of the clearest places where that judgment cannot remain theoretical.
First Spark is an Exemplar of courage before confidence. This lineage can later Ascend into Flame Mentor and eventually Phoenix Champion, but the first lesson is complete in itself. Courage begins when someone prepares honestly, recognizes what fear is telling them, and still takes the next responsible step when the evidence says they are ready.

Courage often has to act before confidence arrives. Preparation can be complete while the body still feels afraid. We may know the equipment is sound, the training was adequate, or the next step is reasonable and still not feel certain.
That does not make fear meaningless; fear can carry useful information. Courage begins when we have taken that information seriously and still decide that fear is no longer the only evidence available.

First Spark does not wait for fear to disappear before acting on what careful preparation has taught her. Confidence may come later; the first courageous movement can happen while uncertainty is still present.

First Spark begins a three-stage lineage in Rising Embers. Its first responsibility is not fearlessness but learning what fear is doing: when it is warning, when it is exaggerating, and how to act deliberately without needing the feeling to disappear first. The path begins with managing one's own response before trying to guide anyone else's.
The lineage can continue from First Spark into Flame Mentor, and from there into Phoenix Champion in Argent Vanguard. Personal courage becomes teachable competence, then protective strength capable of restoring agency in people who have lost it. The progression moves outward: first facing fear, then helping others face it, and finally using strength so that others can stand again for themselves.
