Who is This Card?
A Forge Tender is someone responsible for maintaining the conditions in which other kinds of creation become possible. Fuel, heat, airflow, ventilation, maintenance, and the changing needs of different crafts must be understood well enough that a working fire remains useful rather than becoming unstable. The young woman shown here tends the fires of Cerdaven's Grand Forge, where success often looks like everyone else arriving to find exactly the conditions they need already waiting.
A Forge Tender's work can become nearly invisible when performed perfectly. That invisibility does not make it minor. An unstable furnace can waste rare materials, compromise experiments, damage tools, interrupt multiple workshops, or injure the people depending upon it. Readiness is therefore a form of responsibility rather than mere preparation for somebody else's “real” work.
The Grand Forge has developed this title into a sophisticated discipline because many crafts share its fires and each places different demands upon them. Forge Tenders can be found wherever furnaces, kilns, workshops, engines, or similar systems require sustained attention. Some members of this lineage may later Ascend toward Hammerwright and Master Smith, but those later possibilities do not retroactively make tending the fire an incomplete occupation. The later crafts continue depending upon precisely what the earlier title teaches.
Forge Tender is an Exemplar of quiet readiness. The title belongs to those who keep necessary conditions alive while attention is directed elsewhere. Before anyone can shape a masterpiece, someone has to make sure there is still a usable fire when the work begins.

Beginnings are often less dramatic than the things that eventually grow from them. A skill may begin with a habit practiced when no one is watching, a relationship with attention repeatedly given, and a community with traditions, maintenance, trust, or knowledge that survive only because someone continues tending them. From the outside, that work can look small because nothing has been completed yet and nothing may even appear to be happening.
But some things become possible only because a necessary condition was kept from disappearing. That does not mean everything should be preserved simply because it already exists; a harmful tradition, exhausted system, or failing project does not become worthy of endless maintenance merely because someone has invested effort in it. The value lies in recognizing what must remain alive for something worthwhile to have a chance to grow.

Forge Tender stands at the beginning of a lineage that can continue into Hammerwright and eventually Master Smith. Her first responsibility is not striking metal but maintaining the conditions craftsmanship depends upon: heat, fuel, timing, material behavior, and the steady attention required to keep a forge useful rather than merely hot.
With Hammerwright, that attentiveness moves from the fire into direct action as strength must become measured force. Master Smith can later unite both lessons into mature craft. The path begins with an important restraint: before someone should command greater power, they must first learn how much good work depends upon quietly keeping the conditions for that power under control.
