Who is This Card?
A Grand Veilkeeper is a mature keeper of protected roads, entrusted not merely with knowing hidden ways but with judging when, how, and for whom those ways should remain available. The woman shown here works within Tectara’s hidden-road traditions, where a path can be physically passable and still be wrong to reveal, unsafe to use, or no longer permitted to approach the people beyond it.
A Grand Veilkeeper must think beyond the condition of a single trail. Routes shift, settlements change their terms of access, old markers become unreliable, storms alter crossings, and one newly revealed road can expose several others unintentionally. Preserving passage therefore requires continual comparison between what was known, what is true now, and what the people affected by the route have actually consented to.
Tarsavel and the House of Echoes provide one of Merathen’s richest institutional environments for this title because maps, route reports, agreements, journals, and records of vanished paths are preserved there without being mistaken for one permanent map of Tectara. Grand Veilkeepers can arise wherever protected movement creates similar responsibilities. Their authority can close, redirect, or conceal a road, but it does not properly extend to deciding what another person must become once that traveler reaches choices that are genuinely their own.
Grand Veilkeeper is an Exemplar of guardianship without possession. This mature Ascension can develop from Whisperstep, carrying an early understanding of protective concealment into responsibility for whole networks of passage. Knowing the road creates obligations toward it; it does not make the road, its destination, or the people who may someday walk it one’s property.

Helping someone reach an opportunity can make us feel invested in what they do with it. We opened the door, offered the advice, protected the chance, or kept a path available. But guidance can become control when helping quietly turns into deciding. Someone may know the road better than we do and still not own the choice of whether we walk it.
Good guidance protects possibility without claiming the outcome. A path can be kept open for us, and the decision to enter it can still remain ours.

No further Ascension is currently known beyond Grand Veilkeeper. The path reaches completion not in perfect secrecy, but in accountable guardianship: protecting hidden things without treating secrecy itself as sacred, and knowing that even necessary concealment must remain answerable to the people and purposes it serves.
