Who is This Card?
A Night Herald is a messenger comfortable carrying people, knowledge, and possibility across the uncertain space between one community and another. The title is not tied to an Ascension chain; it describes a form of work and temperament in which unfamiliar roads, guarded thresholds, distant correspondents, and messages whose importance may not yet be understood become part of ordinary life. A Night Herald learns to live in the moment before strangers understand one another. Caution is sensible when an unknown traveler appears on a mountain road at night, and a Herald does not mistake every question for hostility. Credentials, patience, observation, and respect for guarded boundaries allow trust to begin without requiring anyone to abandon good judgment. The same discipline matters when the unfamiliar person is waiting beyond the next pass instead.
Maeriven has particular reason to value Night Heralds because scholarship becomes stagnant when a city hears only what its own people already know. Foreign journals, correspondence, unfamiliar observations, invitations, reports, news, and private messages all enter because someone carries them. Night Heralds perform the same essential work throughout Merathen, linking communities whose differences would otherwise become distance.
Night Herald is an Exemplar of openness at the threshold. The title belongs to those who can remain cautious without allowing caution to harden automatically into suspicion. The unfamiliar may contain danger, but closing every road against the unknown also closes the road by which wonder arrives.

Uncertainty makes the imagination work quickly. When we encounter a person, place, idea, or situation we do not recognize, the absence of information leaves space for possibility, and fear is very good at filling that space first. That instinct has value—some unfamiliar things really are dangerous, and curiosity does not require abandoning judgment—but unfamiliarity itself is not evidence of danger.
Something can feel unsettling simply because we have no category for it yet. A stranger may become a friend, an unfamiliar culture may reveal another way of living, a difficult idea may challenge something we thought was settled, or a road we have never traveled may lead somewhere worth knowing. The truth asks us not to erase caution, but to notice when caution has quietly become assumption.

Where This Path Leads
Night Herald has no known previous or future Ascension, and that independence suits the title unusually well. Not every path in the Collection belongs to a lineage that begins elsewhere or must grow into something beyond itself. Night Herald occupies a threshold: the moment when something unfamiliar first arrives and neither fear nor understanding has yet decided what it means.
