Who is This Card?
A Sunrunner is the mature Ascension of Bright Hoof, where responsibility for receiving a tradition has widened into the trust required to carry it beyond the community in which it was learned. Within Emberfest traditions, Sunrunners are closely associated with carrying the Festival Flame between communities. The woman shown here travels outward from Avernel with fire taken from the Great Hearth, not because the flame itself is magical, but because people have chosen to make its continuity meaningful.
A Sunrunner must carry more than an object. Roads, weather, animals, distance, timing, and the needs of the communities along the route all matter. The flame may kindle another gathering fire, accompany shared food, or become the occasion for exchanging news and stories. What travels outward from Avernel therefore does not remain unchanged simply because its origin is honored.
Emberfest has spread far beyond its birthplace, and Sunrunners embody the principle that Avernel can remain important without becoming the owner of every legitimate way the festival is practiced. Different communities may adapt celebration to their own harvests, foods, histories, and needs. Sunrunners can come from those communities as readily as from Avernel, carrying traditions between places rather than from a cultural center toward passive recipients.
Sunrunner is an Exemplar of tradition strengthened through exchange. Bright Hoof learns to receive something faithfully; Sunrunner learns that faithfulness can survive distance and difference. What is worth carrying does not need to remain motionless in order to remember where it came from.

Tradition can be protected so carefully that it never leaves the people who already understand it. That may keep it recognizable, but it can also keep it small. When traditions travel, they encounter different communities, circumstances, and people who were not present when those traditions began. New relationships form around them, new interpretations appear, and sometimes new practices grow beside the old ones. That change does not automatically mean something has been lost.
A tradition can expand without becoming rootless. The harder question is what must remain recognizable as it moves. Not every detail needs to survive unchanged; sometimes carrying a tradition faithfully requires adapting its form so that its purpose can still be understood somewhere new. Sunrunner extends that lesson by carrying celebration between communities, allowing the Festival Flame and the traditions around it to create connection without requiring every place to celebrate in exactly the same way.
No further Ascension is currently known beyond Sunrunner. The lineage reaches completion where continuity becomes generous enough to move. A tradition can remain connected to Avernel and to the history that formed it while still gaining strength through the distinct people and places that welcome it.
